Are you curious about how project management works in academia? This course explores the nuances of managing research projects and how academic settings differ from other sectors. We’ll examine the unique characteristics of research projects and where external methods and strategies can be effectively adapted to improve outcomes. You’ll also build a transferable project-management skill set that strengthens your career options within and beyond academia.

Course objective

Participants will leave the course with a well-rounded understanding of project management in research settings and practical tools for enhancing their project management skills through the following:

  • Participants will receive a thorough introduction to project management methodology, covering the fundamentals of this field.
  • The course will explore the differences between traditional project management and the challenges of managing research projects, providing valuable insights and perspectives.
  • One of the primary areas of focus will be risk management in research projects, with strategies for identifying and minimizing risks throughout the project lifecycle.

Course description

The demand for traditional project management principles and methods in research activities is growing, with sectors outside of academia leading the charge. However, it is essential to note that research projects have unique characteristics. These projects are inherently complex and uncertain, often involving significant levels of creativity and innovation, making predicting outcomes challenging.

This seminar will address the following issues:

  • The similarities and differences between traditional and research project management.
  • The elevated risk levels in research projects and strategies for mitigating those risks.

Throughout the seminar, participants will gain an overview of fundamental project management principles and learn how to apply these to academic research settings. By the end of the seminar, participants will be equipped with insights and tools to successfully manage research projects despite their inherent complexities.
