Organization
The Department of Political Science is one of seven units within the Faculty of Social Sciences, and conducts research, teaching, and dissemination in the field of political science.
The department has approximately 1,000 students in its bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programmes in Political Science. In addition, the department is responsible for two interdisciplinary bachelor’s programmes, in International Studies and in Public Administration and Management, as well as a master’s programme in Peace and Conflict Studies (PECOS). Students from many other programmes at the University of Oslo also take courses with us.
The academic staff at the department are organized into five thematic subfield groups, which are responsible for teaching in their respective areas and serve as a basic organizational community for the staff: Public Policy and Administration, Political Behaviour, Institutions and Organizations, Regime Dynamics and Contentious Politics, International Politics and Governance, and Political Theory. In addition, all staff members who are responsible for and teach the department’s research methods courses are organized into a separate research methods group.
The department hosts the interdisciplinary Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX).
We currently also have six active research groups, some of which span the thematic subfield groups: International Government, Energy and Environment (IGEE), Comparative Institutions and Regimes (CIR), Policy, Bureaucracy, and Organization (PBO), Political Data Science (PODS), Security, War and Peace (SPW) and Oslo Political Theory (OPT).
