About the Department
The Department of Political Science (ISV) belongs to the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Oslo. Established in 1957, it is the leading and largest political science department in Norway, with a strong position in European political science. We conduct research and teach across all sub-disciplines within political science.
Our staff carry out groundbreaking research relevant to both the Norwegian society and the international community. ISV is the highest-ranked political science department in Norway and among the top 12 departments in Europe within political science according to the Shanghai ranking for 2024.
To offer high-quality education, in the form of research-based training and teaching, is a central part of our activities. We strive to be an open educational and research institution that disseminates expert knowledge and research to the general public and contribute to the application of both established and new knowledge from political science within society.
