Academic interests

My background and training are in public policy, geographic information science (GIS), urban and regional planning, land use law, and natural hazard and climate change risk assessment methodologies. I'm a methodological pluralist and find my epistemic home in political ecology. My Master's degree focused on institutional contexts of vulnerability and adaptation and identified resiliency-driven coastal housing production strategies. My PhD is focused on energy systems and developing novel analytical frameworks and methodologies attentive to socio-materiality as part of UNRULY (ERC Advanced Grant) led by Dr. Andrea Nightingale. I'm also interested in borders and semiology of migration amid planetary climate crisis. These varying interests coalesce around some main themes:

  • Governance and collective action responses to planetary crisis
  • Entanglements of power, authority, and science in the policymaking process
  • Subjectivities of loss, emotion, and transformational adaptation

Courses taught

  • SGO1910, Introduction to Geographic Information Science
  • SOSGEO3203, Environment and Society

While my pedagogy has a strong focus on conceptual and analytical learning, I also strongly believe in transdisciplinary learning and co-production of knowledge.

Background

I've lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest of the USA for much of my life. I've worked on renter's issues and housing policy advocacy, guided backpacking trips and done trail work, spent a lot of time in boats, and worked in public service on natural hazard and climate change risk assessments and planning. I interspersed this with Bachelor's degrees in journalism, political science, and environmental policy (Western Washington 2018), and a Master's degree in public policy and geography (Oregon State 2023).
