What work will be carried out?
For safety reasons, all facades of Harald Schjelderup’s hus will be renovated. This will involve both repairing damage and restoring the exterior surfaces.
The contractor will erect scaffolding around the entire building. The scaffolding will remain in place throughout the renovation period, which means that views and daylight conditions may be somewhat affected while the work is under way.
The noisiest work will take place before 10:00 and after 16:00. The building can also be used during these hours, but noise should be expected. There will also be some construction noise and activity outside the windows between 10:00 and 16:00.
The aim is to schedule the noisiest work during the Christmas break 2026-2027, so that it takes place after most of the teaching for the autumn semester has ended and before the semester starts in January.
Tentative timeline
- Week 39 (September 21 - 25): Planned erection of scaffolding on the north gable near Psykososialen (the wall closest to Ring 3). The work includes securing the scaffolding with drilling and hammering into the wall.
- Week 40 (September 28 - October 2): It will be one week of noisy work on the north gable. All teaching will be relocated away from Forsamlingssalen and Sydfløyen.
- December 2026 - January 2027: Start of noisy work in the north wing. We are awaiting confirmation as to whether the noisy work can be intensified during the Christmas break, when few people are present in the building.
- June - August 2027: Planned start of noisy work in the south wing. Further updates will follow.
- Summer 2028: Tentative project completion.
What happens with the teaching?
Teaching scheduled before 10:00 and after 16:00 will in general be moved to other premises while the renovation is ongoing. However, we plan to double-book teaching rooms so that rooms are available both inside and outside Harald Schjelderups hus. This will make it possible to move teaching out of the building if necessary, or move it back if the work does not disrupt teaching.
The period with noisy work in September/October will serve as a test of how the work affects teaching, and consequently where teaching will be held during the spring semester.
Please check your timetable in My Studies for updated information about the teaching location for your courses.
What will happen to the reading rooms and other study areas?
The reading room and study areas in Harald Schjelderups hus can be used as normal, although they may be affected by noisy work at times.
The reading room in Børrestuveien will be available until 20 November. This date is chosen because it falls after the submission deadlines for master thesis, Hovedoppgave, and the written practicum examination.
The department rents the premises in Børrestuveien, and this lease will end regardless of the renovation work.
