Tom Bratrud and Thorgeir Kolshus: "Frihetsbalansen"
In this article published by The Norwegian Council for Mental Health, Tom Bratrud and Thorgeir Kolshus discuss the balancing-point between individual freedom and collective obligation for young people’s well-being in Vanuatu and Norway.
Can there be too much freedom? Can the apparently endless posibillities for shaping our individual lives also be experienced as overwhelming and difficult? Does the expectation that we are going to find our "unique selves" and create "our own future" also cause us to forsake the safety that lies in following in the footsteps of others? In this essay Tom Bratrud and Thorgeir Kolshus draw on experiences from fieldwork amongst people on two islands in the pacific ocean and in a rural norwegian community to problematize the balance point between being free enough and safe enough.
