Overheating Seminar: Fred Steier
Ecology, Flexibility and Learning in Local and Global Civilization
This presentation extends Gregory Bateson’s seminal 1970 essay (revised and published in his Steps to an Ecology of Mind), Ecology and Flexibility in Urban Civilization, and makes connections to key ideas of the Overheating project at the University of Oslo.
The presentation draws on examples from current projects, including an action research program exploring sense of place at a large urban university, and the participatory design of an “Idea Zone” at a regional science center. I will examine patterns that connect these projects with a focus on ecological understanding and design, the importance of flexibility in balancing identity and change in social systems, and frames for learning at multiple levels.
