Visit from Czech Republic, University of Ostrava

Premysl Macha, Ph.D. from the University of Ostrava, Czech Republic will be on a research stay at the Department of Social Anthropology, from 9. -13. of November 2015.

During his stay he will present the article: "The Politics of Breathing: People, Machines, and Smog in the Czech Republic":

Breathing is a fundamental existential activity shared across the animate and inanimate world. However, when air is in shortage, instead of providing a common platform for a general dialog of peace, breathing becomes a battle between competing existential interests. It becomes political. Such is the case of the severely polluted regions of the Czech Republic where people and machines compete for (clean) air. The politics of breathing at different scales is complex and multilayered and in the search for solutions attention needs to be paid both to the institutional, legal, and political-economic frameworks as well as to the individual strategies of breathing and coping with smog in the intimacies of the everyday life.

Premysl will present his paper Monday 9 November at meeting room 648 ES-building, 14.14-16.00.
