Academic interests

  • Thematic: Contemporary art, visual anthropology, and international migrations.
    Regional: Sicily, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador and Mexico.


Schneider has collaborated in research with artists in Corrientes, NE-Argentina, as well as in Paraguay, a project funded by the British Academy (2005, 2006), the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo (2008, 2009), and the European Science Foundation, HERA Programme 'Creativity and Innovation in a World of Movement' (2010 - 2012). He is now a collaborative partner of  'TRACES: Transmitting Contentious Cultural Heritages with the Arts', (2016 - 2019) funded under the EU's Horizon 2020 programme.


Professor Schneider writes on contemporary art and anthropology, migration and film.

Arnd Schneider holds degrees of Habilitation (Hamburg, 2006), PhD (LSE, 1992), and Magister Artium (Münster, 1986). He has been a Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo since 2007, and was formerly Reader in Anthropology at the University of East London and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Hamburg. Schneider has been an invited visiting scholar at the University of Texas at Austin (1994), the University of Colorado at  Boulder (1996), the Center for International Studies, University of Aalborg (1997), UNAM, Mexico (1998), SUNY, New  Paltz (2004), the Musée du Quai Branly, Paris (2010), the Field Museum, Chicago (2015), and the Museo delle Civiltà, Rome (2017).  He co-organized the international conference Fieldworks: Dialogues between Art and Anthropology at Tate Modern, London in 2003. In 2007 he organized the international symposium  Art/Anthropology: Practices of Difference and Translation at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo, and in 2019 the international conference GLOBAL TRACES at the University of Oslo. He curated the exhibition Bel Suol d'Amore -The Scattered Colonial Body (by artist Leone Contini) at the Museo delle Civiltà, Rome (2017), (with Cecilie Øien) The World Kaleidoscope: Images and Objects from Fieldwork in Anthropological Research (2008), and (with Astrid Anderson and Cecilie Øien) Behind the Screen: Anthropologists work With Film (2013), both at Galleri Sverdrup, University of Oslo. He organized (with Caterina Pasqualino, CNRS) the international symposia Performance, Art and Anthropology (2009) and New Visions: Experimental Film, Art and Anthropology (2012) at the Musée du Quai Branly, Paris.
