Academic Interests

The main topics of Rønnstad’s research is the professional development of psychotherapists, process-outcome research in psychotherapy and clinical supervision. In addition, the conceptualization of evidence based practice (EBP) is an important area of interest. He argues for a broad conception of EBP, which includes breadth in research design, clinical expertise and the paramount importance of an in-depth understanding of clients in contex.

Rønnestad is the European coordinator for The Society for Psychotherapy Reseach-Collaborative Research Network (SPR-CRN). This program, which was initiated and is led by David Orlinsky, U. of Chicago. By September 2010 this project has data from more than 10.000 psycotherapists from more than 20 countreis. Together with Thomas Skovholt, Univesity of Minnesota, Rønnestad is conducting a qualitative study of therapist development.
