Reclaiming the State. Overcoming the Problems of Democracy in Post-Soeharto Indonesia

Edited by Amalinda Savirani and Olle Törnquist

The summary report from the third national assessment of the problems and options of democratisation in the world’s third largest democracy, Indonesia, has now been published.

The results are analysed in view of the conclusions from the previous two surveys as well as the international discussion. The book emphasises the initial successes of the liberal strategy but also its subsequent stagnation; and it engages in analyses of the causes and possible ways ahead, emphasising the prime need to foster more substantive representation of drivers of change.

The democracy assessments have been carried out in cooperation between the Faculties of Social Sciences at the University of Gadjah Mada and Oslo, with support of concerned scholars at the respective universities, about 1000 experienced pro-democracy experts around the country, and with prime financial support from the Norwegian Embassy to Indonesia. The full dataset is now being published at Power, Welfare and Democracy.
