Academic Interests

His research relates to subjects such as referendums, elections and public opinion, radical right parties and immigrants as political actors.

He earned the Cand.polit degree at the University of Oslo in 1974 and the Dr.philos degree in 1999 at the same university with a dissertation about referendums. From 1975 to 1992 he worked at the Institute for Social Research and served for several years as editor of Journal of  Social Research (Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning). In 1995 he initiated the Norwegian Local Election Programme and served as project leader in the first two of these election studies. From 1993 associate professor - and from 2002 profesor - in political science at the University of Oslo in the field comparative politics.


Currently he works on a project named "Politics as an arena of integration. Participation and representation among immigrants in Norway" with Johannes Bergh at the Institute for Social Research. The project is connected to a European research network
