Migration, integration and diversity

Migration influences all aspects of society. At ISS, we research the causes and consequences of migration, long-term integration processes, racism and discrimination, and how increasing diversity gives rise to political conflict and new social movements.

Research on migration, integration and diversity at ISS is characterized by substantial breadth, both theoretically and methodologically, but four overarching topics are particularly central.

  • The causes and consequences of migration. We study the extent and direction of migratory flows, why and how people move, how nation states operate to control migratory flows and control borders, and what kind of dilemmas immigration creates for the sustainability of the Nordic welfare states.
  • Integration processes. We study how immigrants and their children fare in education, working life and civil society, in both rural and urban areas of the country. How does the globalized working life influence migrants’ abilities to organize? In what ways do integration processes affect society as a whole?
  • Racism and discrimination. We study how barriers to participation in society – related to people's skin color, ethnicity, or religious background – lead to inequality, exclusion and new forms of resistance and conflict?
  • Social movements. We study right-wing radical and anti-immigrant organizations, as well as the development of anti-racist movements both nationally and internationally.

The migration research at ISS is a leading research community in Norway and in several areas also internationally. Many of our researchers are active participants in the public sphere and contribute both to challenging and developing policies in the fields of immigration and integration.
