Katrine Fangen: An observational study of the Norwegian far right: some reflections
Chapter in the book Researching the Far Right. Theory, Method and Practice. Routledge, 2020
Author: Katrine Fangen
Ethnographic research on the far right is an important supplement to the many studies that rely on secondary data material and so to say are conducted from the office desk. This chapter gives a detailed account of an ethnographic study of the Norwegian far right, by discussing entrance, building of rapport, informed consent, confidentiality and other ethical and methodological issues. Even though building on a concrete study, the issues are of importance to other researchers in this field, and contributes to a greater transparency of studies that build on direct contact with extremists.
