As a member of the PhD Program Board, I will prioritize improved opportunities for career development and the well-being of PhD candidates.

Career development priorities:

Changes in the offer of PhD courses at the Faculty of Social Sciences

PhD candidates are at the start of their careers and would benefit from courses and workshops that help them develop useful skills in pedagogy, research and time management, writing applications and grant proposals, as well as academic and thesis writing. Right now, the offer is limited at best. For example, while the university offers pedagogy courses to employees, these are not tailored for PhD candidates. I will advocate for improving the offer of elective courses at the faculty so that the needs of PhDs are met.

Mentoring and networking

I will encourage the PhD Program Board to implement a mentoring scheme at the faculty that can help PhD candidates connect with potential mentors from academia and industry with whom they can discuss their research and career opportunities.

Well-being priorities:

Better integration of international and external PhD candidates

There are many international and external PhDs at SV, but the current system is not as inclusive as it should be. For example, the faculty could organize introductory events to welcome international and external candidates, provide relevant information packages, and ensure that more courses are available in English so that international candidates have an equal course offer. I will encourage the PhD Program Board to prioritize this.

Social activities

I believe there should be more opportunities for PhD candidates from different departments to meet and communicate with each other. I will initiate discussions about organizing such events at the PhD Program Board.

Changes in time accounting (timeregnskap)

Many PhD candidates have contracts that include teaching duties. While this is a great opportunity to develop professionally, I believe that PhDs also need to be fairly compensated for the time that they spend. This year I successfully advocated for changes in some of the practices at the Department of Psychology, and I intend to proceed with discussing this issue at the faculty level.
