6. Regional growth disparities in China

China has – by any measure – had an impressive growth since the economic liberalization started around 1980. Urban wages are about ten times larger today than thirty years ago. However, the growth is not evenly distributed across different regions in China – it is the coastal regions which have grown.

Why has the coastal regions grown so much more?

The aim of this subproject is to understand the sources of growth in China and, in particular, to understand the reversal of fortune: why did the coastal regions take off, while the internal regions lagged behind, despite their large initial industrial base?
