Abstract:

Some workplaces seem to be generating more sickness absence than others. However, typically, the sick leave rate at a workplace does not reflect workplace conditions only, but is also a result of the composition of the employees and their health. In this paper, employee mobility between Norwegian workplaces is exploited to estimate and separate the effect of the workplace from individual characteristics affecting the sick leave rate at the workplace, and to measure their relative importance. I find less sickness absence variation between workplaces when excluding the contribution from the composition of employees, but still around 40% of the disparities in sick leave between workplaces is related to the workplace and its conditions.
