Andrea Papini defended his PhD thesis “Empirical essays on taxation and self-employment”  on the 9th of November. Supervisors have been Thor O. Thoresen (Statistics Norway and OFS) and Wiji Arulampalam (University of Warwick and OFS). Opponents were Jean-Francois Wen (University of Calgary) and Åsa Hansson (Lund University).

Gaute Torsvik and  Oddbjørn Raaum received funding from the Nordic Tax Counsel to conduct research on the compliance effects of tax audits.  The funds will be used to finance  a survey experiment assessing how audits affect the perceived riskiness or noncompliance. It  will be undertaken in collaboration with The Norwegian Tax Administration.

Katharina Jenderny presents the paper "Using Tax Deductions to Promote Lifelong Learning: Real and Shifting Responses" co-authored by Thomas Aronsson and Gauthier Lanot. Jenderny is a Senior research assistant at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics.

The paper "Robust Inequality of Opportunity Comparisons: Theory and Application to Early-Childhood Policy Evaluation" was accepted for publication in the Review of Economics and Statistics. The paper is written jointly by Tarjei Havnes, Associate Professor and Director of OFS, and Francesco Andreoli, Researcher at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), and Arnaud LeFranc, Professor at Université de Cergy-Pontoise.

The paper "Distributional Implications of Joint Tax Evasion" was published in The Economic Journal. The paper is written by OFS affiliates Odd E. Nygård, Joel Slemrod and Thor O. Thoresen. Joel Slemrod is the Director of the Office of Tax Policy Research Paul W. McCracken Collegiate Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy Professor of Economics. Odd E. Nygård and Thor O. Thoresen are researchers at Statistics Norway.

Pierre-Philippe Combes presents the paper "The Costs of Agglomeration: House and Land Prices in French Cities", co-authored with Gilles Duranton and Laurent Gobillon. Combes is a Research Professor at GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne.
