Academic interests

Uzair Ahmed’s research centres on racism, racialisation, identity construction, religion, radicalisation and violent extremism. Ahmed employs cultural sociological theory in combination with approaches from race and ethnicity studies to elucidate meaning-making processes on both individual and relational levels. His doctoral thesis focuses on how and why Muslim men in Norway adopt and reject political violence. Ahmed builds his analysis on qualitative interviewing and participant observation.

Ahmed is currently working on an EU-funded research project, DRIVE, which explores the role of social exclusion in the light of polarisation, radicalisation, extremism and violence - in relation to the far-right and Islamism - in Northwest Europe.

Background

  • Ahmed worked as a PhD-fellow at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo from 2018 until 2022. He has been working as a researcher at the Center for Research on Extremism since June 2022.
