The international research project GLOBUS is looking for students who are interested in writing an MA thesis on the theme of the EU and global political justice.

GLOBUS logo

GLOBUS is a research project that critically examines the European Union’s contribution to global justice. The project brings together a multidisciplinary team of scholars from partner institutions in Brazil, China, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Norway and South Africa. GLOBUS is coordinated by Helene Sjursen at ARENA. Students will be supervised by a member of ARENA’s staff affiliated to the GLOBUS project.

Requirements

  • Eligible students must be enrolled in an MA-programme and meet the academic progress requirements of their programme
  • Write your MA thesis in English on one of the topics listed below, with a supervisor from ARENA’s GLOBUS project
  • Daily workspace at ARENA from October 2019 until June 2020
  • Submit the thesis during the spring term 2020

Topics

We are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in MA theses that address one of the following topics:

1. The EU’s “Aid for Trade” policy

GLOBUS invites applications for a master thesis that analyses an area where trade and development policies of the European Union overlap. The master thesis will focus on the EU’s Aid for Trade policy, which aims at helping developing countries benefit from trade agreements.

The choice of cases will be done in cooperation with the GLOBUS supervisor.

2. The EU’s Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs)

GLOBUS offers funding for a master thesis that analyses the EU’s trade policies with the so-called ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) countries, as these are organised through Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs). Candidates may choose to focus either on the overall rationale behind the establishment of the EPAs, on a single partnership agreement, or comparisons of several agreements.

The choice of cases will be done in cooperation with the GLOBUS supervisor.

3. The EU and the BRICS states

GLOBUS offers funding for a master thesis that analyses the EU's relationships with one of the BRICS states, or with BRICS as a collective. GLOBUS would be particularly interested in a master thesis examining the EU and the foreign policy of either China, India or Russia.

The choice of cases will be done in cooperation with the GLOBUS supervisor.
