Jarle Trondal awarded for 'best article'

ARENA's Jarle Trondal has been awarded 'Best article of 2018' by the 'Norwegian Journal of Political Science' for his article about Norwegian civil servants' work on EU and EEA affairs.

We congratulate Professor Jarle Trondal, together with PhD Fellow Nadja S. B. Kühn (UiA), on being awarded the prestigious 'Best article of 2018' by 'The Norwegian Journal of Political Science' (Norsk Statsvitenskapelig Tidsskrift).

Their article 'The Norwegian EU and EEA administration - an organizational theoretical perspective on the ministries' work on EU affairs' addresses the role of Norwegian government officials in European multi-level governance in the period 1996 to 2016, and presents unique new data from this time period. In addition, Trondal and Kühn present an organizational theoretical perspective to explain the behavior of so-called "Eurocrats" in Norwegian ministries.

According to the jury, the article highlights an interesting and timely issue, building on empirical data that makes it a highly relevant contribution to the research field:

The role of the civil servants in European multi-level governance highlights both how closely Norway is integrated with the EU, despite the fact that we are not a member, and that Norwegian civil servants are working on a basis of what they consider good policy from the EU system. In addition, the article highlights an interesting aspect of the role of democracy, since the Norwegian civil service is so closely integrated with a system of which we are not a member.

Trondal and Kühn's article will be published in the journal World Political Science Review, which publishes translations of prize-winning articles nominated by prominent national political science associations and journals around the world.
