EUMARGINS' researcher Professor Les Back was keynote speaker at the Conference 'YOUTH 2010: Identities, Transitions and Cultures' which took place at the University of Surrey from Tuesday 6 July to 8 July 2010. In his talk, Les Back shared some findings from EUMARGINS.

This article examines changing conceptions of citizenship and the rights of minorities -- that is, national membership -- in contemporary Europe. In so doing, it addresses some of the theoretical challenges faced by social constructivism when aspiring to account for agency in the diffusion of social norms.

The article is an EUMARGINS publications as well as a result of the research project 'Skola, valfrihet och integration (VR)' (School, freedom of choice and integration').

EUMARGINS seeks to identify and determine principle determinants of social exclusion that affect young immigrants in the seven cities. This will be pursued by exploring a series of specific objectives and sub-objectives. In this section, we specify the research objectives that guide this project.

The researchers of EUMARGINS will collect a great set of information concerning young immigrants' experiences. The qualitative part of the project is a combination of a biographical and an ethnographical research design. Recruitment of informants and data collection will take place from January 2009 to September 2010.

The University of Oslo is cooperating with the Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS). In November 2009 a Chinese delegation from CASS visited UiO, and the Institute of Sociology and Human Geography organized a CASS-UiO workshop entitled Youth, Identity, Migration and Social Problems. The workshop dealt amongst others with issues such as migration trends, inclusion in receiving countries and identity and subcultural approaches. Under the latter theme, project coordinator Katrine Fangen talked about Youth and the Ethnic Challenge, based upon findings from the EUMARGINS research project.
