Marit Melhuus

Faglige interesser

Marit Melhuus har de siste årene arbeidet med betydninger av slektskap i Norge. Med utgangspunkt i assistert befruktning, reproduksjonsteknologi, lovgivningsprosesser og offentlige debatter utforsker hun utviklingen av en norsk biopolitkk og dens ringvirkninger i skjæringsfeltet mellom praksis og forestilinger. Denne forskningen gjenspeiler mer overgripende interesser knyttet til lokale forståelser av kunnskap, moral, politikk, religion og natur i et komparativt perspektiv.

Hun har tidligere arbeidet i Latin Amerika med fokus på økonomisk antropologi, sosial endring, kjønn og moralitet.

Bakgrunn

Marit Melhuus har vært ansatt som Professor i sosial antropologi ved Universitetet i Oslo siden 1996. Hun tilbragte et år som professor ved Senter for fransk norsk samarbeid ved Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (MSH) i Paris (2005). Hun er utdannet ved Universitet i Oslo. Graden Dr.Philos forsvarte hun på grunnlag av et feltarbeid i Mexico som omhandlet kjønn, ære og skam og betydninger av Jomfruen av Guadalupe. Magister graden (1978) er basert på et feltarbeid blant tobakks dyrkere i Corrientes, Argentina (1974 - 75). Hun har vært deltager i to størrre forskningsprosjketer: ”The Transnational flow of concepts and substances” (NFR) og "The Public Understanding of Genetics. A cross-cultural and ethnographic study of the 'new genetics' and social identity" (EU). Publikasjoner fra disse prosjektene omhandler tema som slektskap, assistert befruktning, rettsantropologi/staten, globalisering, bio-politikk, antropologisk metode og bytte. Hun har tidligere arbeidet ved Arbeidsforskningsinstituttene, innenfor "Skipsprogrammet".
