Knut G. Nustad er sosialantropolog utdannet ved Universitet i Oslo (cand. mag) og Cambridge University (MPhil og PhD). Han har forsket på urban politikk, uformelle prosesser og utviklingspolitikk, og har skrevet om antropologiske perspektiver på staten og om konflikter rundt naturvernområder i Sør-Afrika. Han er seniorforsker ved Norsk Utenrikspolitisk Institutt, Førsteamanuensis ved Universitetet for Miljø og Biovitenskap, medredaktør av Forum for Development Studies og tidligere leder av Norsk Forening for Utviklingsforskning. Nustad har blant annet skrevet Gavens makt: Norsk utviklingshjelp som formynderskap (Pax 2003) og redigert State formation: anthropological perspectives (Pluto 2005, med Christian Krohn-Hansen).  I de senere årene har han jobbet spesielt med konflikter rund naturvernområder i Sør-Afrika. I svært mange av parkene i landet, og i mange andre land, er det konflikter mellom verneinteresser og lokalbefolkning over bruk av naturressurser. Denne forskning har i tillegg til å undersøke konkrete konflikter også analysert den historiske bakgrunnen til naturvern, og på hvilken måte ‘natur’ har blitt skilt fra samfunn og gjort til objekt for vern.

Knut Nustad deltar i prosjektet: Slums, states and citizens: Policing, welfare services and political participation among the urban poor in New Delhi, Nairobi and Durban der han har ansvaret for Sør-Afrikadelen. Prosjektet løper fra 2011-2014 og er finansiert av NFR.

Han deltar også i prosjektet Cultures of Biodiversity: Perceptions and Practices (SAI), der han undersøker forholdet mellom vernede områder og tilliggende lokalsamfunn i Sør-Afrika. NFR-prosjektet løper fra 2011 til 2014.
