Middlemen at a Corner: Youth, Party Cells and Street-Level Politics in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Green party flags dot the landscape across Tanzania, signalling the presence of party cells. In my study, I pose the question of why do young urban Tanzanians still gather under the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party’s green flags? This thesis is based on nearly one year of fieldwork in a suburb of Dar es Salaam, during which I followed young middlemen attached to party cells, taking part in their everyday lives, while studying street-level politics more broadly. My main argument is that young middlemen create new party cells because the ruling party offers a combination of protection, status and opportunities largely unattainable outside the system. This study thus differs from other strands of the anthropological literature that contend the African youth have rejected party politics and ideology due to the states’ failure to deliver prospects of a viable future.
