Academic Interests

In my research I am primarily interested in:

  • Ideological and value changes in society

  • Ethical issues and area ethics

Together with Hilde EIleen Nafstad I organize the Oslo Ideology Project, a large-scale longitudinal research project where we investigate ideological developments within the Norwegian society across the past decades as these ideological developments are reflected in the language of the public discourse. The Oslo Ideology Project also has a comparative component where we compare ideological developments within several countries: In particular we compare developments in various societies with regard to communal values, individualism, social justice and altruism. I am connected to one of University of Oslo’s centers of excellence, CSMN (Center for the Study of Mind in Nature).

  • Societal psychology

  • Cultural psychology

  • Positive psychology

Teaching

Higher education and employment history

I am a social- and developmental psychologist; cand. psychol. from the University of Oslo in 1971. From 1968 to 1986 I was at INAS (Institutt for Anvendt Sosialvitenskapelig Forskning/Institute of Applied Social Research). From 1986 on I have been at the University of Oslo where I established mellomfag (psychology as a subsidiary subject/minor) and I was responsible for this study until 2001 when the study structure at the University of Oslo was reorganized. Currently, I give courses in societal and minority psychology at the BA-level; in community psychology at the masters level; and philosophy of science in the vocational study.
