Project ends 26th of August

The research project "Power and Democracy" started in 1998 and will be finished in 2003 with a conference 26th of August. The research group was appointed by the Government of Norway in March 1998. It's leader is Professor Øyvind Østerud at Department of Political Science, University of Oslo.

Power and Democracy - a general scheme 1998 - 2003

The resolution B. innst. S. nr. 2 (1997 - 98), passed by the Norwegian Parliament on 11th December 1997, authorizes a research group to compile a report on Power and Democracy within a period of five years. The mandate states that the main theme of the report should be the terms of Norwegian parliamentary democracy and any alterations that may have occurred with regard to these terms.

- Makt- og demokratiutredningen er inne i sitt femte og avsluttende år. Et par hundre forskere har vært involvert i arbeidet, 30 bøker og 60 rapporter er hittil utgitt.
- Makt- og demokratiutredningens arbeid avsluttes med en sluttkonferanse 26. august.
- Bakgrunnen for utredningen er Stortingets vedtak 11. desember 1997 om å utføre en utredning om makt og demokrati i Norge.
- Forskergruppen for Makt- og demokratiutredningen ble oppnevnt i statsråd 13. mars 1998. Forskergruppen ledes av professor Øyvind Østerud ved Institutt for statsvitenskap, Universitetet i Oslo.

Democracy is shrinking: The role of democracy is shrinking in oil-rich Norway, researchers said on Tuesday at the end of a five-year state-funded study.

"Democracy as a chain from elections to decisions is weakened all the
way," said Oyvind Oesterud, who chaired the 'Power and Democracy' project. "Parties don't mobilise many voters any more, and young people are less active than before, so the trend is likely to gather pace," Oesterud said.
