Professor Alan Finlayson from the University of East Anglia will give a presentation with the title "Rhetoric and the Study of Politics".
Western political theory and political science was, at its foundation in Ancient Greece, fundamentally concerned with social communication and with the forms and practices of public debate and argument: rhetoric. But today that concern has been somewhat displaced. In this talk I make the case for a renewed “Rhetorical Political Analysis” which combines political theory and political science with insights from the rhetorical tradition of thought and analysis. This, I suggest, can help us to make sense of ongoing changes (and crises) of contemporary politics. I discuss, in broad terms, four key research areas or themes to which I think RPA can particularly contribute: political institutions, media technologies, ideologies and democratic culture.
Professor Oddbjørn Knutsen will give an overview of the book "The Nordic Models in Political Science. Challenged, but still viable?". He will also comment on his two chapters "Political parties and party systems" and "Social cleavages and political value conflicts".
Tore Wig and Øyvind Østerud will discuss the topic "Trump in The White House: Increased risk of war?". The discussion will be based on Wig's op-ed article "Sleepless in the Age of Trump" in the Norwegian daily Klassekampen.
PhD Candidate Martin Søyland will present the Talk of Norway project with description, how to get involved, and examples of usage.
PhD Candidate Lisanne de Blok will present the paper "Responsible Government, Responsive Citizens? The impact of responsibility perceptions on the link between performance evaluation and political support", co-authored with Wouter van der Brug og Tom van der Meer.
Lisanne is a part of the Programme group "Challenges to Democratic Representation" and is visiting Oslo these days to work with Staffan Kumlin and Atle Haugsgjerd who will also chair.
