In this talk I examine the word inequality as customarily employed in sociology, particularly in America. I note how "inequality" has come to substitute for "injustice" in American sociological writing, and examine the philosophical puzzles inherent in such a shift. Shifting my focus to injustice, I examine two central problems in the development of a genuinely sociological concept of injustice: first the possibility of and problems of measurement, second the challenges posed by a social ontology that goes beyond the simple-minded social ontology of classical liberal thought.
