Harald Rohracher

Harald Rohracher is a senior research fellow (Ass.Prof.) at the Department of Science and Technology Studies, University of Klagenfurt, and has been co-founder and from 1999-2007 Director of the Inter-University Research Centre for Technology, Work and Culture (IFZ) in Graz, Austria.

He is lecturing on ‘Social Studies of Technology’ and ‘Environmental Sociology’ at the Universities of Klagenfurt and Graz. From September 2009 to June 2010 he will hold the ‘Joseph A. Schumpeter Fellowship’ at Harvard University. In his research, he is focusing on a better understanding of the co-evolution of technology and society and strategies to promote socially and environmentally sound technologies. His main fields of research are the social shaping of technology, the transformation of energy systems, and the role of end-users in technological innovations. His interests in the project are the social embedding of solar energy technologies both in local practices and in broader institutional environments, and the conditions for the transfer of solar technologies between different cultural contexts.
