Power and Participation: The 25th Conference of the Nordic Sociological Association 2011

The 25th Conference of the Nordic Sociological Association is to be held on 4–7 August 2011 at the University of Oslo, Norway, and is hosted by the Norwegian Sociological Association in collaboration with the Department of Sociology and Human Geography. This years's theme is Power and Participation and marks a return to a topic that has always enjoyed a central position in Nordic sociology.

Almost a decade after the Danish and Norwegian Power Studies were closed in 2003, we are told, it is time to bring up the theme once more, asking not only about power in society at large, but also in organizations, ethnic and gender relations, communities, and in cultural constellations. Special sets of questions are raised when regarding power as part of structural complexities. In addition to viewing power as a set of top-down constraints, bottom-up perspectives concerning changes in autonomy and control among ordinary citizens become essential when adding questions of participation. The conference aims to expand our knowledge of power and participation from different angles and approaches.

There 4 keynote speakers are:

Michèle Lamont on racism and exclusion

Neil Fligstein on markets and power

Stewart Clegg on power in organizations

Jean-Pascal Daloz on elite distinction
