Utvikling og globalisering

ESOPs ambisjon er å forstå levedyktigheten til egalitære markedsøkonomier. Hvordan påvirker global konkurranse fordelingen av inntekt og velstand?

 

Spørsmål om egalitære samfunns levedyktighet er relevante for alle land, fattige og rike, egalitære og ikke-egalitære. Det finnes sammenhenger mellom likhet, sosial organisering og økonomisk utvikling i alle land. Disse sammenhengene er like viktige for opprettholdelsen av europeiske velferdsstater som for muligheten for et egalitært samfunn mer generelt. Kan velferdsordninger som de nordiske bli introdusert i alle typer samfunn? Eller er de kun mulige i samstemte, homogene og utviklede land med en ekstraordinær forpliktelse til likhet? Har de nordiske erfaringene relevans for land som er konflikt-pregede, heterogene og fattige?

Vi studerer mulighetene for å implementere velferdsordninger i fattige land og i hvilken grad den nordiske modellen kan forstås som en utviklingsstrategi. Er en velferdsstat for de fattige mulig? Velferdsordninger er mest nødvendig der de er minst utviklet. Velferdsordninger i ekstremt fattige land kunne kanskje spilt en viktig rolle for økonomisk vekst, sosial rettferdighet og likestilling.
