Sammendrag

In this article we examine whether the level of formal municipal care ser vi ces affects the likelihood of providing informal care, controlling for care needs in the municipalities and characteristics of the caregivers. We find that people who live in municipalities with extensive formal care are less likely to provide informal care. Informal care is not related to the municipality’s operating expenses for care services. A possible interpretation is that increasing spending without increasing the amount of care places does not reduce the amount of informal care. Because the findings are based on cross-sectional data the results must be interpreted with caution, but they suggest that formal and informal care can to some extent substitute for each other.
