Foundation, History, Main Objectives and Target Groups

The 21st Century Europe entails challenging processes of integration and disintegration. Integration radically challenges the social cohesion of old and new societies. European social science has so far largely been confined to the nation-state level.

But it is now, more than ever, crucial that social scientists are able to study the differential impacts of processes of integration and fragmentation. For such a purpose, comparative studies and methodology provide the obvious point of departure for any social scientist who wish to take the complexity of the European challenges seriously.

The Oslo Summer School in Comparative Social Science Studies provides PhD and postgraduate courses at a highly professional and international level. It was initiated in 1992 to further international contact among students and researchers working within comparative social sciences and social science methodology.

Over the years, a number of distinguished scholars and lecturers within the various fields of social sciences accepted our invitation to teach a doctoral course at Oslo Summer School in Comparative Social Science Studies.

Lectures, Assignments and ECTS Credits

- Our courses comprises 20 hours of lectures over the course of five days (Monday to Friday).

- The courses are at a postgraduate/PhD-level, and the language of instruction for all courses is English.

- The lectures will be held at the University of Oslo, Blindern Campus.

- Courses that require the use of computers will combine ordinary lectures with computer workshops.

- Those who are admitted to the program will receive an extended course curriculum and parts of the required readings in advance.

Application for Oslo Summer School consist of 3 parts:

1. Online application form

2. A letter of recommendation from your educational and/or research institution.

3. A statement of motivation / statement of purpose (max 1 page)

Application deadline: Admission is granted on a rolling basis and applying early is to your advantage.

Those who apply early and with satisfying formal qualifications found to be in order, have the benefit of being offered a place in our courses before those applying later in the spring.
