This seminar will present a research project in the World Bank, initiated and led by Jon Strand, and financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment. The project builds a “valuation platform” where several value aspects of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest are mapped geographically, in terms of their local and regional economic values, with pixel granularity of 1 km2. The project implies both biophysical impact assessment and economic valuation, and is a collaborative project between teams of natural scientists and economists. Mapping is done for reduced impact logging, non-timber forest products, carbon, biodiversity and biological resources, hydrological impacts of rainforest losses on the Brazilian economy, and for the aggregate value of these components. Biophysical and economic value maps are created for each impact category. Two separate websites are developed as part of the project, and both are publicly accessible and under continuous development.
