The ARENA student grant
The ARENA student scholarship is announced biannually, early in each of the semesters. As a rule, 2-3 grants are awarded every semester. The grant is awarded for a period of five months, but the successful student will have access to a work space at ARENA for a full academic year (two semesters).
The next call will be out in August 2013.
Guidelines for student scholarships
The aim of the ARENA scholarship programme is to encourage the production of master theses which will contribute to the research activity within ARENA’s prioritized fields and to create interest for European Studies among students, and thereby strenghtening the recruitment to the field of European Studies. Students affiliated with ARENA become part of the academic collegium. We expect students to participate in relevant communal activities at ARENA. The students will be given a workspace at the ARENA premises.
Applications and selection
We wish to attract students with projects of a high academic standard. We will give preference to applicants with a combination of the following:
- enrolment in a Master's programme
- good marks
- a well-written project outline
- a project which overlaps with our research interests
- a realistic time schedule.
Students can be affiliated with ARENA up to a year, but the grant will normally run for 5 months only. The end of the affiliation period should coincide with the completion of the master thesis. The candidates will be selected by the ARENA research director at ARENA, who in certain cases may be advised by other members of staff.
Rights and duties
The students are required to finish their thesis within the outlined time frame, to contribute to relevant ARENA activities during their time at ARENA, and have their daily working space at ARENA. The students must also be willing to present their work in an ARENA context. They may also be asked to contribute to the organisation of certain events such as ARENA conferences. Students are entitled to tuition by one of ARENA’s researchers and a workspace alongside other ARENA students and research assistants.
The grant is 4,000 kroner per month. 15,000 is made payable at the beginning of the period, the final 5,000 is paid upon the thesis’ completion. On the condition that the Master’s thesis is awarded a good mark, the student may have it published as part of the ARENA report series. The decision will be made by the ARENA research director. ARENA retains the right to conclude or shorten the affiliation period when there is proof of slow or no progress or violations of the agreement between the student and ARENA.
