David Mayes is guest researcher at ARENA, where he is contributing to the EuroDiv Project. He is Professor of Banking and Financial Institutions and Director of the New Zealand Governance Centre at the University of Auckland. Until taking up the present appointment he was also Director of the Europe Institute, and is now also Chairman of the Board.

Academic interests

Mayes' main academic interest lies in the aspects of the problems raised by closer economic, financial and monetary integration particularly in Europe. In the EuroDiv Project, Mayes is working specifically on the political economy workpackage. He is looking both at the implications of a "banking union" and the enhanced fiscal aspects of monetary union for the future structures of governance and operation of the EU/EEA. His work will consider the implications of the diversity of impact of both the measures and the enduring financial crisis.

David Mayes was previously BNZ Professor of Finance at the University of Auckland. He was Advisor to the Board at the Bank of Finland, having been Chief Manager at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. He is a former Director of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research and the Professor of Economics at London South Bank University and has been Senior Research Fellow at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research in London and the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels. His links with ARENA date from 1994 when he was Director of the COST Programme on The Evolution of the Single European Market.
