Academic Interests

Marianne Riddervold's main areas of academic interest include the Common Foreign and Security policy of the EU and the EU as an international actor.

Background

Marianne Riddervold has been a Research Fellow at ARENA since May 2004. Riddervold's PhD-project is financed by a scholarship programme under The Norwegian Ministry of Defence.

Projects

The EU's foreign policy - between interests and human rights

What characterises the EU’s foreign policy? This PhD project investigates the question of whether and how the EU’s foreign policy differs from foreign policy as we traditionally conceive it. Through empirical analyses of EU policy coordination and behaviour in the ILO Maritime/UN and on EU positions on humanitarian intervention, the project looks at whether there is a connection between the way the EU is constructed and the policies it promotes. In relation to this, it asks to what extent the EU may be characterised as a cosmopolitan actor in the international community.
