Academic Interests

Dr. Mai’a Cross' main areas of academic interest are European foreign and security policy (CFSP/CSDP), diplomacy, public diplomacy, and soft/smart power.

Background

Dr. Mai’a Cross is Researcher at the ARENA Centre for European Studies. She is also Professor of Political Science at Northeastern University in Boston. She is currently Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Senior Visiting Fellow at the Clingendael Institute in the Hague, affiliate at Harvard's Center for European Studies, and co-chair of the EU as a Global Actor interest section of the EU Studies Association. She serves on the editorial board of Place Branding and Public Diplomacy, The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, and Palgrave Macmillan’s Series in Global Public Diplomacy.

Mai’a Cross holds a PhD in Politics from Princeton University, and a bachelor’s degree in Government from Harvard University. She has been an assistant professor at Colgate University and the University of Southern California. She has also been a Fulbright Fellow in European Union Studies and Visiting Fellow at the EU Institute for Security Studies in Paris.

Projects

Mai’a Cross is the author of Security Integration in Europe: How Knowledge-based Networks are Transforming the European Union (University of Michigan Press, 2011), which is the 2012 winner of the Best Book Prize from the University Association of Contemporary European Studies, and The European Diplomatic Corps: Diplomats and International Cooperation from Westphalia to Maastricht (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007). She is co-editor (with Jan Melissen) of European Public Diplomacy: Soft Power at Work (Palgrave, 2013), and her current book project is entitled The Politics of Crisis in Europe (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming).

Dr. Cross has also published numerous articles and book chapters on a wide range of topics related to European epistemic communities, security and defense, intelligence sharing, diplomacy, and smart power in journals such as Journal of European Public Policy, Review of International Studies, Millennium, International Politics, Comparative Politics, European Foreign Affairs Review, and European Security. In 2016, she will serve as guest editor (with Ireneusz Pawel Karolewski) for a special issue of the Journal of Common Market Studies, entitled 'Europe’s Parallel Foreign Policy: The Ukraine-Russia Crisis'.
