Academic Interests

Among Hans-Jörg Trenz' fields of interest are the emergence of a European public sphere and of a European Civil Society, European civilization and identity, migration and ethnic minorities, cultural and political sociology, social and political theory.

Background

Hans-Jörg Trenz joined ARENA as a research professor in February 2005. He has previously been senior researcher at Humboldt-University of Berlin, post-doctoral fellow in the graduate school 'The New Europe' at Humboldt University/Freie University of Berlin, researcher at Münchner Projektgruppe Sozialforschung, Munich.

Trenz studied sociology, political science, criminology and Romance languages at the University of Saarbrücken/Germany, University of Bari, Italy, University of Barcelona and Middlesex University in London. He holds a PhD in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute in Florence. In January 2005 Hans-Jörg Trenz concluded his 'Habilitationsverfahren' at Humboldt University in Berlin.

Trenz is also EURECO Professor at the Centre for Modern European Studies (CEMES) at the University of Copenhagen.

Projects

European public sphere

In the study of the European 'public sphere' we examine transformations in terms of the legitimacy of new institutional designs in media organisations and by journalists, participation and civil society and in terms of mobilising citizens' support or opposition in relation to European integration.

Among the more recent projects, we have analysed forms and processes of opposition to European integration (the Euroscepticism project), and the internet as a new source of political communication about Europe (the Digital public sphere project).

The possibilities for the emergence of a European public sphere have been further tested out in the EuroPolis project. In this project, a deliberative polling experiment was carried out to test whether deliberative democracy can contribute to address the democratic deficit in Europe, with particular reference to the 2009 European parliamentary elections.

On May 29-31 2009 EuroPolis brought 400 European citizens from the 27 member states to Brussels to debate immigration, climate change, and the EU policy- making process- a unique experiment in informed decision-making. Participants spent three days discussing these issues in small working groups, and then in plenary sessions with a battery of experts and election candidates.

The constitutionalisation of the EU

My long term interest in the constitutionaliastion of the EU is driven by the attempt to advance a political sociology of European integration as part of the interdisciplinary agenda of European studies. The aim is to amplify the institutional and governance perspective on European integration by developing a macrosociological understanding of Europeanisation as a particular form of societal change and as a dynamic of social and political integration beyond the nation-state. This includes paying tribute to the EU-society relations in the long term constitutionalisation process and specifying the conditions for the emergence and the possible role of a European society.

Among the more recent projects, we have analysed the role of civil society and political representation in the political space of Europe (the Social constituency project)

In a series of cooperative research projects, we have also analysed the politicization of European integration in relation to public and media debates on EU constitution-making. Here we have focused on media debates during the drafting and ratification period of the Constitutional Treaty in France, Germany, the UK and Spain and, in cooperation with Ulrike Liebert, University of Bremen, we have conducted a cross-European exploratory survey of EU legitimacy contestations during the so-called reflection period (2005-2007).
