Academic Interests

Daniel Gaus' main areas of academic interests are reconstructive social theory with a focus on the relationship between the concepts of democracy, legitimacy and the state in western societies.

Background

Gaus holds a Ph. D. in political science from the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany. His thesis deals with Jürgen Habermas' discourse theory of the democratic constitutional state and the debate about the legitimacy of the EU.

He has studied political science and philosophy at the Technische Universität Darmstadt and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität, Frankfurt/Main.

Projects

Gaus is a member of WP1 "Theoretical Framework" of the 5-year long ARENA-led and EU Commission funded research project RECON - Reconstituting Democracy in Europe. The main task for WP 1 is to give a theoretical account of democratic legitimacy in the European multilevel order.

A question of particular relevance is whether the European political order can gain legitimacy by becoming a democracy without becoming a state. In this context Gaus' research focuses on the reconstructive analysis of normative belief systems in Europe, particularly with respect to the legitimacy of political order. This involves an examination of different empirical methods in order to find out which might be suited to deliver insights with regard to such conceptual analysis.
