Academic Interests

Cathrine Holst's main fields of academic interest are political theory, democratic theory, philosophy of social science, the role of expertise in the EU, public debate on Europe (in particular the role of intellectuals), gender equality policies in Norway and the EU, feminist theory and gender studies.

Background

Cathrine Holst holds a doctoral degree from the University of Bergen (2005) with the thesis Feminism, Epistemology & Morality. She is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography, University of Oslo, in addition to her position at ARENA.

From 2005 to 2007 she was associate professor in philosophy of social science at the Centre for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities, University of Bergen. Earlier on Holst was employed as a research assistant by the Centre for Women and Gender Research, University of Bergen, and by the research project ‘Power and Democracy’, University of Oslo/Bergen.

Holst was Visiting Scholar at New School for Social Research, New York, in 2001, and at Freie Universität, Berlin, in 2004. 

Holst was visting fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre at the European University Institute from January to June 2012.

Projects

Holst directs the project EPISTO: Why not epistocracy? Political legitimacy and 'the fact of expertise' . EPISTO is funded by the Norwegian Research Council for a period of five years, with project start summer 2012.

Participating researcher in the NORCONE project (The Norwegian Constitution in a Changing European Context).

Holst was one of the central researchers in the RECON (Reconstituting Democracy in Europe) project's research on Justice, Democracy and Gender.

Particpating in the project Grunnloven og politisk kompetanse which will analyse the relationship between the Constitution and the question of political competence of the citizens.

Participant in a newly funded project on institutional change in democratic societies, Institusjonell endring i demokratiske samfunn.
